Job summary

Jobtailor in Colorado is seeking an Electrical/Power Systems Engineering student for a summer internship to support commissioning and testing of substation additions and modifications on capital projects.

You will gain hands-on experience in power system protection and control, relay testing, field observations, and documentation management under mentorship, with a hybrid schedule and travel to project sites within the service area.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university pursuing Electrical or Power Systems Engineering degree.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours/week) and part-time during school year (up to 20 hours/week).
  • Willing to commute to designated work location in-person per hybrid policy.
  • Coursework in power systems preferred and strong communication skills.
  • Committed to internship for a year or longer and able to work in field and office.

Responsibilities

  • Support testing and commissioning of substation additions and modifications on capital projects.
  • Perform protection and control tasks including modeling, short circuit studies, relay testing.
  • Assist engineers with commissioning test plan creation and documentation management.
  • Perform power system analysis using software tools and visit field sites.

Job description

  • Work with Engineering staff to support testing and commissioning of substation additions and modifications related to capital projects and operations/maintenance
  • Perform tasks spanning power system protection and control, including protection system modeling, short circuit studies, automated test development, power system controls design review, and analytical tasks supporting regulatory compliance
  • Assist engineers with commissioning test plan creation
  • Perform power system analysis using software tools
  • Run relay tests in the lab
  • Visit field sites with engineers to learn commissioning practices
  • Manage commissioning documentation
  • Gain practical field experience and mentoring in commissioning practices
Requirements
  • Current student, Freshman or higher
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering
  • Travel to project sites within the service area to observe commissioning activities
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) and part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week)
  • Able to commute to the designated work location in-person, per the hybrid work policy
  • Coursework in power systems preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally
  • Must be self-motivated, have good mechanical aptitude, and ability to work well with others
  • Able to commit to the internship for a year or longer
  • Willingness to work in field and in office
