Job summary

Merchants Insurance Group is seeking a Commercial Lines Underwriting Assistant to join the Melville, NY underwriting team. You will help set up new business, quotes, renewals, and endorsements in our policy writing system.

The role focuses on supporting the underwriting team, ensuring accurate rating, policy information, and timely service to agents. A strong customer service orientation and insurance terminology familiarity are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 1+ years of experience with insurance company or agency preferred.
• Experience with insurance rating and knowledge of insurance terms desirable.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills required.
• Computer experience including Microsoft Word; ImageRight knowledge is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Respond to inquiries from agents regarding policy ratings and billing status.
• Update rating information and verify policy data with underwriting team.
• Review loss control surveys to verify policy exposures for proper rating.
• Assist in achieving commercial lines loss ratio objectives for the assigned territory.
• Assist in achieving commercial lines production goals for the assigned territory.

The Commercial Lines Underwriting Assistant will become part of a dedicated underwriting team focused on setting up new business, quotes, renewals and endorsements into our company policy writing system.

We offer a hybrid work schedule, requiring two full days per week in the office and flexibility to work remotely or in office the remaining days. This model supports collaboration while providing flexibility and work-life balance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Responds to inquiries from agents regarding policy ratings and billing status.
• Updates rating information, verifies policy information, and works with the underwriting team to meet service standards and company goals.
• Reviews loss control surveys to verify policy exposures for proper rating.
• Assists in the achievement of commercial lines loss ratio objectives for the assigned territory.
• Assists in the achievement of commercial lines production goals for the assigned territory.

Qualifications & Skills:

• High school diploma or equivalent work experience.
• 1 plus years' work experience in an Insurance Company or Agency.
• Prior experience in insurance rating and knowledge of insurance terms.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Computer experience including Microsoft Word experience.
• ImageRight knowledge is a plus.

Merchants Insurance Group Pay information:

Merchants Insurance Group offers a competitive pay scale. The estimated salary for this role ranges from $25.00 - $35.00 hourly based on leveling and geography, along with an equity component and a comprehensive benefits package. This range is merely an estimate; actual compensation may deviate from this range based on skills, experience and qualifications.
