Job summary

Merchants Insurance Group is seeking a Commercial Lines Underwriter in a hybrid role based near Mt. Laurel, NJ, with a focus on collaborating with agency partners to deliver professional service and profitable growth.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years of commercial lines underwriting experience and a strong background in building relationships, supported by MS Office and underwriting systems like WINS and ImageRight.

Qualifications

• College degree or equivalent work experience.
• 3+ years of commercial lines underwriting experience preferred (or 5 years in an agency environment).
• Strong background in commercial lines accounts and building relationships.

Responsibilities

• Cultivate solid relationships with Agents and internal staff toward optimal outcomes for Merchants and policyholders.
• Coordinate with underwriting assistant to follow underwriting policy and service standards.
• Review accounts beyond individual authority with Regional Underwriting Manager or Supervisor and determine course of action.
• Aim to achieve commercial lines regional production goals and loss ratio objectives for the territory.

We offer a hybrid work schedule, requiring two full days per week in the office, with flexibility to work remotely or onsite the remaining days. This model supports collaboration while providing flexibility and work-life balance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Cultivating solid relationships with Agents and internal staff while working towards achieving the most optimal outcomes for Merchants and our policyholders.
• Works with the underwriting assistant to ensure adherence to corporate underwriting policy and service standards.
• Reviews accounts beyond individual authority with the Regional Underwriting Manager or Supervisor and recommends a course of action.
• Achieve commercial lines regional production goals and loss ratio objectives for assigned territory.

Qualifications & Skills:

• College degree or equivalent work experience.
• 3+ years of commercial lines underwriting experience preferred or 5 years commercial experience within an agency environment.
• Property and Casualty insurance related coursework is a plus i.e. CPCU.
• Strong background in commercial lines accounts and building relationships.
• Previous Agency relationships within the local insurance industry are highly desirable.
• Microsoft Office knowledge as well as the ability to work with internal company systems (WINS, ImageRight etc.).
• Strong communication, organizational and computer skills.

Merchants Insurance Group Pay information:

Merchants Insurance Group offers a competitive pay scale. The estimated salary for this role ranges from $75,000 - $110,000 based on leveling and geography, along with an equity component and a comprehensive benefits package. This range is merely an estimate; actual compensation may deviate from this range based on skills, experience and qualifications.
