Job summary

SST Direct is seeking an HVAC Service Technician Class III-IV for mission critical data centers in Richmond, VA. You will perform advanced maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on cooling systems, electrical controls, and related infrastructure to ensure uptime.

Ideal candidates have extensive HVAC service experience in demanding environments, EPA 608, and a Journeyman license preferred. The role requires on-site work, safety adherence, and on-call availability as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; trade school preferred.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification required.
  • Journeyman HVAC license or equivalent experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on mission critical HVAC systems including chillers, CRAH/CRAC, pumps, and controls.
  • Diagnose and repair complex HVAC equipment; troubleshoot electrical circuits and VFDs.
  • Respond to emergencies; maintain uptime and support data center operations.
  • Monitor system performance using BAS/BMS and CMMS; document findings and recommendations.
  • Follow safety procedures and maintain compliance records.

Job description

Position Summary

The HVAC Service Technician Class III-IV, Mission Critical Services is a fully independent and highly skilled service professional responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing mission critical HVAC systems within data center environments. This role requires advanced knowledge of commercial and industrial HVAC systems, electrical controls, refrigeration systems, and critical cooling infrastructure. Technicians are expected to independently diagnose complex equipment issues, respond to emergency situations, and ensure optimal uptime and performance of sensitive computing environments.

This position works with minimal supervision and serves as a trusted technical resource for complex service, maintenance, and repair activities involving data center HVAC infrastructure.

Pay Range:

  • The pay range for an HVAC Service Technician Class III is $39 - $46/hr.
  • The pay range for an HVAC Service Technician Class IV is $46 - $55/hr.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

include but are not limited to the following:

HVAC Maintenance & Service
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on mission critical HVAC systems, including chillers, CRAH units, CRAC units, pumps, cooling equipment, air handling systems, and associated controls.
  • Inspect equipment, monitor system performance, verify operating conditions, and identify potential reliability concerns before failures occur.
  • Replace worn or malfunctioning components, including motors, fans, sensors, VFDs, valves, control boards, and other mechanical or electrical components.
  • Perform startup, commissioning support, testing, and operational verification of HVAC equipment and systems.
Advanced Troubleshooting & Repair
  • Diagnose complex HVAC system malfunctions using advanced troubleshooting techniques, system performance analysis, control sequences, and diagnostic tools.
  • Perform electrical troubleshooting on motors, control circuits, VFDs, sensors, relays, contactors, and HVAC control systems.
  • Analyze system pressures, temperatures, airflow patterns, electrical measurements, and operating data to identify root causes of equipment failures.
  • Respond quickly to system alarms and critical equipment failures to minimize operational disruption and downtime.
  • Perform complex repairs on HVAC, refrigeration, and control systems while maintaining data center operational requirements.
Mission Critical Systems Operation
  • Maintain and troubleshoot critical cooling infrastructure supporting data center operations.
  • Work with redundant cooling systems and understand the operational requirements associated with maintaining uninterrupted environmental conditions.
  • Support operation and maintenance of chilled water systems, pumping systems, CRAC/CRAH equipment, precision cooling equipment, and associated mechanical systems.
  • Ensure all work activities are performed in accordance with site operating procedures and critical environment requirements.
Monitoring & System Analysis
  • Utilize Building Automation Systems (BAS), Building Management Systems (BMS), and related monitoring platforms to evaluate system performance and identify potential issues.
  • Analyze trend data, operating parameters, alarm history, and equipment performance metrics to optimize reliability and efficiency.
  • Document findings, repairs, maintenance activities, and recommendations in service reports and work management systems.
  • Identify opportunities for operational improvements, energy efficiency, and system reliability enhancements.
Safety & Compliance
  • Adhere to all safety procedures related to refrigerants, rotating equipment, lockout/tagout, and work on energized electrical systems.
  • Follow all customer, company, and regulatory requirements related to mission critical facilities and HVAC operations.
  • Maintain accurate service documentation and compliance records.
  • Participate in emergency response activities and on-call rotation as required.
Required Skills & Knowledge
Technical Expertise
  • Advanced understanding of HVAC principles, refrigeration cycles, airflow dynamics, hydronic systems, controls, and mission critical cooling systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of chillers, CRAH units, CRAC units, pumps, VFDs, BAS/BMS platforms, and redundant cooling architectures.
  • Ability to independently diagnose and repair a wide range of commercial, industrial, and mission critical HVAC equipment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and root cause analysis.
Electrical Knowledge
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills involving three-phase power, control circuits, motors, transformers, relays, sensors, VFDs, and HVAC control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, control schematics, sequence of operations, and technical documentation.
Data Center Knowledge
  • Familiarity with data center operations, critical cooling requirements, reliability standards, and uptime expectations.
  • Understanding of mission critical operating environments and redundant system configurations.
Computer Literacy
  • Proficiency using BAS/BMS software, service applications, testing equipment, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Qualifications for HVAC Technician
  • High School Diploma, GED required. Technical or Trade School graduate preferred.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification required. Journeyman HVAC License or equivalent demonstrated experience preferred.
  • A minimum of 4 years of commercial HVAC service experience required.Experience working with mission critical, data center, healthcare, pharmaceutical, industrial, or similarly critical environments strongly preferred.
  • Data Center or Mission Critical Facility certifications preferred.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with customers, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel and work overtime as required.
