Markel Group is hiring a Commercial Underwriter to produce and underwrite new and renewal commercial bond business while building productive relationships with independent agents and brokers. The role requires risk assessment and sound judgment to maintain a profitable bond book.

The position involves influencing underwriting decisions, handling bond applications, and occasional overnight travel to attend agent meetings or industry events, with a focus on excellent service to our customers.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2+ year’s industry experience.
• Ability to analyze bond applications and data to make informed decisions.
• Ability to interpret procedures and handle multiple variables.
• Ability to manage high volume of bonds and prioritize tasks.

Responsibilities

• Gather, analyze and underwrite commercial surety bonds.
• Evaluate and manage risk while adhering to underwriting philosophy.
• Understand legal documents, indemnity agreements, and bond forms.
• Demonstrate judgment on financial condition, credit history, and character.
• Develop new business through agency relationships.
• Possess strong written and verbal communication; interact with agents and customers.
• Price, quote, negotiate terms and service accounts.
• Renewal bond underwriting and contribute to workflow improvements.
• Travel overnight occasionally for agent meetings or industry events.
• Mentor and support team members.
