If you enjoy working in the field and troubleshooting substation equipment, then this is the job for you. The position involves work in ComEd’s West region, includes a take-home vehicle, and offers overtime pay. Testing and Commissioning engineers are frontline field engineers who commission, maintain, and troubleshoot transmission and distribution protection and control systems within substations. System types include relays, SCADA, automation, power and control equipment, fiber optics, power line carrier, and revenue metering. Responsibilities include creating commissioning plans, writing procedures, testing, analyzing results, troubleshooting malfunctions, supporting maintenance, and performing preventive tasks. They also lead in field activities, support outage planning, maintain engineering documents, assist with audits, and promote safety culture.

Primary Purpose

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

Works on larger jobs, small projects, and routines under guidance, focusing on electrical power distribution equipment and control circuits. The role involves testing and commissioning of transmission and distribution substation equipment. Extended hours, including storms or emergencies, may be required.

Primary Duties

PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on relays, communications, power reclosers, etc., following manuals (35%)
  • Conduct acceptance and in-service testing of equipment like transformers, circuit breakers, panels, SCADA, etc. (20%)
  • Assist with restoring malfunctioning equipment during emergencies through testing (20%)
  • Participate in on-the-job and classroom training (15%)
  • Complete documentation such as reports, test data, relay settings, etc. (10%)

Job Scope

Conduct maintenance and testing activities on power equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in a technical field with 0-3 years experience, or associate’s with 2-5 years, or 5-7 years relevant experience/education.
  • Successful completion of the TECH Test (exempt with an Engineering degree).
  • Knowledge of standards, codes, and practices for maintenance, testing, or installation.
  • Ability to read blueprints and use test instruments.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel and respond to emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering.
  • Experience with electrical power equipment, troubleshooting, especially in automation.
