Job summary

Monroe County Hospital & Clinics in Albia, IA is seeking a dedicated Medical Coder to review medical records, assign ICD-10/CPT-4/HCPCS codes, and monitor charges across patient types. The role includes ER coding, infusion billing, and handling release of information while maintaining strict confidentiality.

The position requires RHIT certification or equivalent experience, strong attention to detail, teamwork, and proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• RHIT certification or equivalent coding experience.
• Mandatory reporting certification or within 90 days of hire.
• Attention to detail, organizational ability, and prioritization.
• Ability to work in teams and communicate accurately and clearly.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Outlook).

Responsibilities

• Reviews documentation on each medical record.
• Performs documentation deficiency analysis; checks records for proper documentation, signatures and results.
• Assigns codes using ICD-10, CPT-4, HCPCS and modifiers per guidelines.
• Assigns facility and physician levels for ER patients per policy.
• Assigns facility, professional and anesthesia procedure codes for surgery encounters.
• Monitors charges on all patient types, debiting or crediting as necessary.
• Assists with release of information requests (walk-in and phone).
• Assists with scanning/uploading documents into EHR as needed.
• Maintains certification by attending education opportunities when applicable.
• Regular and reliable attendance; compliance with MCHC training requirements.
• Adheres to MCHC mission, values and Standards of Behavior.
• Maintains patient and hospital confidentiality.
• Promotes positive relationships with patients, visitors, coworkers and providers.
• Participates in department huddles, in-services, meetings and educational opportunities.

Job Schedule

Full-time: 40 hours/week, Monday – Friday

Hours: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

• These hours are flexible.
• Based on experience, there may be an opportunity for a remote or hybrid schedule once the orientation period has been completed.

Job Description

• Assists with release of information requests, both walk-in requests and over the phone.

• Maintain certification by attending education opportunities when applicable.

• Ongoing compliance with MCHC educational and training requirements.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Current coding or RHIT certification or equivalent experience
• Mandatory reporting certified or within 90 days of hire.
• Overall attention to detail, organizational ability, and ability to prioritize.
• The ability to work in teams and communicate accurately and clearly.
• Computer experience using Microsoft Office 2007 Excel, Word and Outlook.
• Proficient in English in order to communicate with patients, families, and other caregivers.

Preferred Education and Experience

• Completed educational program in medical coding.
• Excellent ICD-10 CM, CPT-4 and HCPCS coding skills with three years of coding experience
• Knowledge of encoder software.
