Job summary

Ascension Saint Thomas is looking for a senior leader to direct the Health Information Management Department, overseeing records, coding, audit and transcription with a focus on quality and compliance. The role emphasizes staff development, budget stewardship, and cross-functional collaboration across facility services.

The ideal candidate brings leadership experience in health information management, knowledge of AHIMA/AAPC credentials, and a proven track record in driving operational

Qualifications

• Required credentials in health information management: CCS, COC, CPC or AHIMA/AAPC credentials prior to hire or transfer.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Health Information Management department operations, including records, coding, audit and transcription.
• Hire, coach, evaluate staff and schedule performance; drive staff development and discipline as needed.
• Provide input and monitor the annual departmental budget and financial outcomes.
• Develop ongoing quality assessment activities to ensure regulatory compliance and governmental requirements.
• Oversee daily operations, customer service, operational efficiency, and physician relations within Revenue Cycle Management.

• Participates on teams, committees, and special projects both internally and externally related to facility and systems services.
• Conducts hiring, firing, coaching, evaluations, disciple action and scheduling of staff.
• Provides input and monitors annual departmental budgets.
• Develops ongoing quality assessment activities to ensure compliance with regulatory and governmental requirements.
• Responsible for the daily operations, activities, customer services, operational efficiencies, quality improvement, financial outcomes, human resources management and physician relations of the Health Information Management Department (Records, Coding, Audit, Transcription).

What Minimum Requirements You’ll Need

Licensure / Certification / Registration

• Required Credential(s):
  • One or more of the following:
    • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credentialed from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
    • Certified Outpatient Coding (COC) credentialed from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
    • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credentialed from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
    • Reg Health Info Admnstr credentialed from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
    • Reg Health Info Tech credentialed from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.

Education

• High School diploma equivalency with 3 years of cumulative experience and 1 year of cumulative leadership experience required. OR Associate's degree/Technical degree with 2 years of cumulative experience and 1 year of cumulative leadership experience OR 4 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience and 1 year of cumulative leadership experience required.
