Job summary

Emory Healthcare is looking for a Coding and Documentation Coordinator to oversee the coding process within the Health Information Management Department. This position includes training coding staff and monitoring compliance with internal standards.

Job Description

By facility and/or patient type, a Coding and Documentation Coordinator within the Health Information Management Department will perform tasks and activities under the direction of the facility Coding Manager.

  • Distribution of uncoded patient encounters to employed and contract coding resources for final coding; ongoing training of coders and vendor support staff on the accurate coding of patient encounters according to patient type and/or facility specific coding guidelines.
  • Training of coders and vendor support staff on use of the Emory electronic health record (EeMR).
  • Monitoring work distributed to coders and contract vendors for compliance with Emory turn‑around time (TAT) standards.
  • Monitoring flagged records (reviewed but not coded) for readiness to code and returning records to coders as appropriate.
  • Maintaining ongoing communications via email and telephone calls with Coding Contract Account Managers re coding quality, productivity and TAT.
  • Working with physicians, mid‑level staff and clinical departments regarding complete patient documentation for coding of patient encounters; performing intermittent quality reviews for coding accuracy and reporting findings to appropriate internal and vendor resources.
  • Making patient type changes and admit or discharge date revisions in the coding/abstracting system.
  • Handling registration issues including requests to Making Data Healthy.
  • Handling requests for coding and/or billing edit review from coders working billing edits or Patient Financial Services.
  • Performing follow up on issues re aging uncoded patient encounters.
  • Providing coverage for coworkers as needed; coding patient encounters as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Post high‑school education necessary to complete programs in health record technology or health record administration and must have one of the following credentials: RHIA, RSS, CCS or CPC (outpatient position only); a combination of education and experience may be considered for highly qualified candidates.
  • 5 years of production coding the applicable patient type/types; knowledge of charge master processes preferred; experience with the 3M HDM coding/abstracting system, HealthQuest registration/billing system, and Cerner Millennium EHR preferred.
