Job summary

City of Fort Scott is seeking a Codes Inspector to inspect residential and commercial properties for compliance with city ordinances. You will work under the Codes Manager to identify nuisances, advise on violations, and ensure timely corrections.

Requirements include an Associate’s Degree or equivalent, plus related experience; must have a valid driver’s license and ability to speak effectively in court or public settings.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school.
• Six months to one year related experience and/or training.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules and manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively in a courtroom or before groups.

Responsibilities

• Inspects existing residential and commercial properties to ensure compliance with city ordinances.
• Obtains permission from owners/tenants to enter dwellings and inspects for nuisances.
• Issues citations for code violations and explains housing standards to stakeholders.
• Appears in court on behalf of the City when required.
• Follows all City safety policies and performs additional duties as directed.
