Job summary

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) is an entity within the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). The Coder II abstracts medical record documentation to select codes (ICD-10-CM/PCS, HCPCS, CPT4) and assigns final DRGs, following official guidelines and department policies.

AAPC or AHIMA credential is required. The role is an employee position with 40 scheduled hours per week, paid hourly at a Health-25 grade, within the Revenue Cycle.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in health information technology or related field, or 5 years coding experience.
• Coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS) required.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to resolve coding issues.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Abstract inpatient, outpatient, clinic, and/or emergency department medical record documentation to assign ICD-10-CM/PCS, HCPCS, and CPT4 codes.
• Adhere to coding compliance guidelines for complete, accurate, timely, and consistent codes including final DRG assignment.
• Follow official coding guidelines from AMA, AHA, and AHIMA; comply with HIM policies.
