Job summary

Medical University of South Carolina seeks a Coder II to abstract inpatient, outpatient, clinic, and ED records to assign ICD-10-CM/PCS, HCPCS, and CPT4 codes. You will ensure complete, accurate, timely coding and final DRG assignment per official guidelines.

Under supervision, you’ll work with a team in MUSC's Health Information Management Department to maintain coding quality and compliance across settings, including hospital and ambulatory care services.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in health information technology or related field or 5 years coding experience; coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS) required.
  • With Associate's degree, minimum of 2-3 years of coding experience and familiarity with coding software.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to resolve coding issues.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: RHIT, CCS, CCA, CPC, CPC-A, or other coding credential required

Responsibilities

  • Abstract inpatient, outpatient, clinic, and/or ED documentation to select ICD-10-CM/PCS, HCPCS, and CPT4 codes.
  • Adhere to coding compliance guidelines for complete, accurate, timely and consistent codes including final DRG assignment.
  • Ensure codes align with official guidelines per AMA, AHA, and AHIMA; comply with MUSC policies.
