Code Enforcement Officer - Housing Safety

Job Overview

The City of Portland's Permitting & Inspections Department is seeking a full-time Housing Safety Code Enforcement Officer. This role involves ensuring compliance with Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code (MUBEC), NFPA codes, Zoning, and other relevant standards through inspections of residential rental properties. The officer will collaborate with regulatory agencies to promote safe housing, working independently in the field and as part of the Licensing and Housing Safety Division team. Building positive relationships with landlords and tenants is essential.

Responsibilities
  • Provide excellent customer service to a diverse population including property owners, managers, tenants, and contractors.
  • Apply knowledge of building codes, construction principles, home inspections, and fire safety standards.
Qualifications
  • Obtain Maine Certification for a Code Enforcement Officer in Residential Building Code, Land Use, and Court Rule 80K within 12 months; certification as a Certified Fire Inspector (CFI-1) is also required.
  • Valid Maine Class C driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and a good driving record.

Salary & Benefits

This union position starts at $33.66/hour (CEBA Grade 18M-SP). Benefits include health insurance, paid holidays, leave, insurance options, retirement plans, fitness reimbursement, recreation facilities, and professional development discounts.
