Job description

Join a dynamic team dedicated to enhancing the safety and quality of life for Portland’s residents, visitors, and workers. The City’s Permitting and Inspections Department is seeking a full-time Housing Safety Code Enforcement Officer responsible for ensuring compliance with the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code (MUBEC), National Fire Protection Association Codes (NFPA), Zoning, and other applicable building standards related to the inspection of residential rental properties. In partnership with various regulatory agencies, the code enforcement officer will share responsibilities to promote safe housing. The position involves working independently in the field and collaboratively within the Licensing and Housing Safety Division team, which includes three other inspectors. Building positive relationships with landlords and tenants is essential, alongside ensuring the safety of rental housing.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Inspect residential rental properties for compliance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Collaborate with regulatory agencies to enforce housing safety regulations.
  • Engage with landlords and tenants to promote safe housing practices.
Required Skills & Experience:
  • Experience in building inspections or code enforcement related to residential properties.
  • Knowledge of MUBEC, NFPA codes, and local zoning laws.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Salary & Benefits:

This union position is classified as CEBA Grade 18M-SP, with a salary starting at $33.66/hour. The City of Portland offers outstanding benefits and a collegial, mission-driven work environment. Benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave.
