Job summary

City of Rowlett is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer under direct supervision to enforce ordinances at inspection sites, including retail and public properties.

The City offers a 4-day work week with hours 7:30 am - 5:30 pm depending on departmental schedules, with excellent benefits and a 7% TMRS pension match. Requires a High School Diploma or GED and two years of experience or TDHS Registered Code Enforcement Officer status.

Qualifications

• Requires High School Diploma or GED.
• Two years of experience or Texas Department of State Health Services Registered Code Enforcement Officer.
• Ability to read and understand technical reports, ordinances, maps, plats, and instructions.
• Ability to generate reports, records, correspondence and regulations.
• Ability to address and solve code enforcement problems; address multiple priorities; relate to city issues as necessary.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people and possess strong customer service skills.

Responsibilities

• Inspect sites to enforce ordinances concerning high grass and weeds, unsightly conditions, junk and abandoned vehicles, fences, trees and shrubs and other maintenance issues.
• Routinely inspects and responds to complaints regarding the grease interceptor program and illicit discharge compliance.
• Conduct inspections of liquid waste hauler trucks for compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
• Proficiency of sampling and inspection of grease removal devices such as grease interceptors and grit traps preferred.
• Responds to complaints of potential code violations; conducts field investigations; gathers evidence; takes photos; questions complainants and witnesses; compares facts to code requirements and makes findings, warnings, notices or citations.
• Drafts and distributes correspondence, memoranda, notices, fliers, brochures, media releases and reports relating to code enforcement issues; maintains logs and records.
• Coordinates efforts with police, planning, building and related departments, the prosecuting attorney(s) and other staff or agencies as needed.
• Meets with owners, tenants, contractors, developers, businesses to explain code requirements and violations; secures compliance.
• Prepares reports; coordinates with Dallas County, property owners, and contractors; works with police and prosecutors to obtain statements; prepares case reports for court action; testifies in court.
