Job summary

The Nature Conservancy in Awendaw, SC, seeks a Burn Crew Manager to lead a three-person seasonal crew in prescribed fire operations across varied terrains. You will supervise, plan, and implement burns, coordinate resources, and ensure safety and compliance with fire management practices.

Responsibilities include overseeing time/expense tracking, equipment maintenance, and supply purchases while maintaining partnerships with agency and Conservancy staff.

Qualifications

• Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) and FFT1 task book completed.
• FFT1 requirements per Fire Management Manual.
• Ability to achieve NWCG arduous rating (45lb pack 3 miles in <45 min).
• Experience supervising staff or volunteers is required.
• Experience operating and maintaining equipment (4WD, engines, ATVs/UTVs, chainsaws, drip torch).
• Willingness to travel extensively; weekends; flexible schedule.
• Must have valid driver's license and comply with Auto Safety Program.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise the burn crew to meet fire management goals.
• Monitor progress of crew members and coordinate with fire staff.
• Handle time and expense tracking, equipment repair, and supply purchasing.
• Make key fire-line decisions based on fire behavior and resources.
• Pursue ongoing professional development and fire certification credentials.
• May assist on wildland fires with partners and travel within SC or beyond.
