Job summary

The Nature Conservancy in South Carolina seeks a Burn Crew Manager to lead prescribed-fire operations, supervise three seasonal technicians, and coordinate with fire staff and partners across diverse terrains. You will oversee planning, preparation, and execution of burns, while fostering professional development and safety compliance.

Responsibilities include time/expense tracking, equipment maintenance, and supply procurement, plus acting as a fire-line decision maker.

Qualifications

• Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) and FFT1 task book completed.
• Ability to achieve NWCG arduous wildland firefighter rating by carrying a 45lb pack 3 miles in <45 minutes.
• Experience supervising staff or volunteers.
• Experience operating and maintaining equipment (4WD, Type-6 Engines, ATVs/UTVs, chainsaws, drip torch).
• Willingness to travel extensively and work weekends; flexible schedule.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Responsibilities

• Lead the burn crew by monitoring progress toward fire management goals.
• Handle administrative duties: time/expense tracking, equipment repair, and purchasing supplies.
• Make on-fire decisions based on fire behavior and available resources.
• Assist on wildland fire operations with partners and travel as needed.
