Job summary

Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) is seeking a Tobacco Coalition & Community Outreach Coordinator to lead SHS advocacy efforts in Marin County. The role focuses on policy development, community engagement, and education to reduce tobacco-related harms while promoting health justice within Bay Area communities.

The ideal candidate will coordinate monthly meetings, train coalition members, and build relationships with stakeholders across public health, government, and community groups.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Recruit, educate, train, and lead coalition members to assist or implement program activities such as policy development, SHS outreach, education on SHS complaints, and diversity outreach.
• Plan, organize, and facilitate regular coalition meetings.
• Build leadership and organizing capacity of Marin County residents and community groups to drive and shape systemic change.
• Develop fact sheets, public information media reports, and educational kits for minimum price objectives and multi-unit housing objectives; meet with community groups to educate on these issues.
• Accelerate and monitor the coalition’s Endgame Objectives.
• Schedule coalition meetings via Zoom and manage coalition communication.
• Prepare coalition members for public speaking, media interviews, and public comment at city meetings.
• Provide educational letter-writing and property-management support to help implement smoke-free housing ordinances.
• Maintain the coalition website, post updates on Facebook, produce occasional PSAs on local television stations, and develop monthly e-newsletter updates for members.
• Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including community members, community-based organizations, government organizations, and other coalitions.
• Gather community-based data to increase opportunities for community input.
• Coordinate and facilitate monthly coalition meetings, including agenda preparation, minute taking, and distribution of updates.
• Utilize a database to track outreach and engagement.
• Manage community health data and maintain relevant records.
• Prepare and submit progress reports.

Position Overview

Full time: $33 per hour, 20 hours per week. Reports to: Advocacy and Policy Director. Location: Marin County, California. Applicants must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area or surrounding counties and able to coordinate weekly in-person activities in Marin County, and join the team in the office.

Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1976 with the mission to promote the healthy development of individuals and families and to build community. Engaging Community in Advocacy and Policy (ECAP) is a division of BACR that facilitates community-based public health advocacy throughout the Bay Area. Within this, the Smoke-Free Marin Coalition seeks an applicant for the position of Tobacco Coalition & Community Outreach Coordinator.

The purpose of the coalition is to collaborate with the community to develop systems, change messaging and settings, advocate for policies that lessen the predatory tactics of tobacco companies, reduce exposure to second- and thirdhand smoke, prevent tobacco use among young people, and create a healthy, safe environment for residents of Marin County.

About the Ideal Candidate

We seek someone who believes that community members are inherently knowledgeable and capable of self-advocacy, recognizes everyone has a right to live in an environment that promotes health, and is committed to health justice. The candidate should have experience working with communities and a desire to support an environment that allows youth to thrive without tobacco. Strong independent work skills and a collaborative team spirit, especially in dismantling structural, race-based barriers to health, are essential.

Advocacy Responsibilities
