Qualifications

  • Experience: Prior basketball playing experience (high school, collegiate, or club level) and previous coaching or mentoring experience with youth/middle school student‑athletes.
  • Knowledge: Thorough understanding of middle school basketball rules, sports safety, conditioning, and age‑appropriate tactical concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Lead team practices, home and away games, tournaments, and team travel in coordination with the Athletics Office.
  • Manage basketball court safety, equipment inventory (balls, training aids, uniforms, medical kits), and facility setup.
  • Maintain clear, proactive, and respectful communication with parents, school administration, game officials, and staff.

SUMMARY

We are seeking a student-centered Middle School Basketball Coach to lead our program. This coach will foster a positive, competitive environment focused on character and academic integrity while mentoring players of all abilities. The coach will build foundational skills in beginners and elevate advanced concepts in experienced student‑athletes.

Key Responsibilities & Duties
Academic Mentorship & Character Development
  • Monitor student-athletes' academic progress, attendance, and classroom conduct to ensure compliance with school academic eligibility policies.
  • Serve as a positive role model, emphasizing sportsmanship, accountability, teamwork, and emotional maturity on and off the court.
Differentiated Skill Instruction & Player Development
  • Design structured, progressive practice plans that accommodate athletes ranging from complete beginners to experienced AAU/club-level players.
  • Teach fundamental mechanics—including proper shooting technique, ball‑handling, passing, footwork, rebounding, and defensive stance—with a focus on sound habits and safety.
Program Leadership & Game Management
  • Lead team practices, home and away games, tournaments, and team travel in coordination with the Athletics Office.
  • Manage basketball court safety, equipment inventory (balls, training aids, uniforms, medical kits), and facility setup.
  • Maintain clear, proactive, and respectful communication with parents, school administration, game officials, and staff.

  • Experience: Prior basketball playing experience (high school, collegiate, or club level) and previous coaching or mentoring experience with youth/middle school student‑athletes. (Preferred)
  • Knowledge: Thorough understanding of middle school basketball rules, sports safety, conditioning, and age‑appropriate tactical concepts.
Additional Responsibilities and Duties
  • Must have regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Candidates must be able to commit to practices each week day right after Middle School dismissal, and all games.
  • Candidates must be willing to work with the overall boys basketball program at the MS and HS during the offseason at the discretion of the head varsity coach.
  • Candidates must also be willing to scout for the high school program on occasion at the request of the varsity head coach.
  • Candidates must hold CPR/AED certification or be able to obtain this prior to the season.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise any assistant coaches.
  • Supervise any volunteers.
  • Supervise student athletes in that sport.
  • Supervise any students or persons associated with that sport.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Valid teaching certificate is preferred although not required. Hrs. in physical education or equivalent hours and courses in coaching theory are helpful. Certification in CPR, First Aid is recommended.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

The ability to read and interpret documents, instructional manuals, technical reports, procedures, and rulings. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

The ability to calculate figures and amounts, to work with percentages. The ability to apply basic concepts in algebra and geometry. To have some computer literacy. The ability to work with statistics.

REASONING ABILITY

The ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. The ability to problem solve various situations. The ability to use of sound judgment in making decisions that affect the program.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Exhibit qualities of leadership. Have the ability to organize. Show a spirit of cooperation. Possess the ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Has the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Possess the ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.
