Job description

Our client is looking for a CNC Lathe Set up Machinist responsible for setting up, operating, and supporting production on CNC lathes and Swiss screw machines to produce high precision components. This role focuses on machine setups, tooling changes, offset adjustments, and first article verification, working closely with programmers, engineers, and operators to ensure safe, efficient, and repeatable production.

Responsibilities
Machine Setup & Operation
  • Set up and run CNC lathes and Swiss machines using established programs and process documentation.
  • Perform complete machine setups including tooling installation, bar loading, guide bushing setup, offsets, and tool geometry verification.
  • Load programs, verify proper operation, and make necessary offset adjustments to maintain part quality.
  • Conduct first article inspections and in-process checks to ensure parts meet print and tolerance requirements.
Swiss Machining Support
  • Support production on Swiss CNC screw machines (Citizen, Star, Tsugami, or similar).
  • Understand and manage live tooling, sub spindles, bar feeders, and part transfer operations.
  • Assist with troubleshooting machining issues related to tooling wear, surface finish, chip control, or cycle time.
Quality & Process Control
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and work instructions.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, and optical comparators.
  • Monitor machine performance and proactively address quality concerns to minimize scrap and downtime.
Continuous Improvement & Team Support
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineers and Programmers to improve setups, tooling life, and process stability.
  • Provide guidance and support to CNC operators during production runs.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in accordance with company and safety standards.
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience setting up CNC lathes, including Swiss machines.
  • Strong understanding of machining fundamentals, tooling, speeds and feeds, and materials.
  • Ability to read blueprints and apply GD&T concepts.
  • Experience setting tools, adjusting offsets, and verifying part quality.
  • Comfortable working in a precision, tight tolerance manufacturing environment.

  • Familiarity with bar fed production and high mix/low volume work.
