Job summary

Freeform is seeking a Manufacturing Engineering Intern (CNC Machining) for Summer 2027 in Hawthorne, CA. You will develop and optimize CNC programs, interpret 3D models, and collaborate with engineers to improve machining processes.

The role offers hands-on experience with DMG Mori and Haas machines, opportunities to work on automation, and a path to contribute to world-class metal 3D printed parts.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• Exposure to CNC programming and machining through coursework, labs, internships, or clubs.
• Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and optimize CNC programs for complex metal components, including post-processing of 3D printed parts.
• Support programming, setup, and refinement on multi-axis CNC machines (DMG Mori and Haas).
• Interpret CAD models, drawings, and GD&T specifications to create precise machining programs.
• Help select cutting tools, speeds, feeds, and machining strategies for efficiency and repeatability.
• Troubleshoot CNC programming issues in collaboration with machinists and design engineers.
• Create, maintain, and update CNC program libraries, tool databases, and process documentation.
• Contribute to process improvement projects to boost productivity and reduce cycle times.
• Collaborate with additive designers on workholding and assess design vs process fixes.
