Job summary

Whelan Machine & Tool in Louisville, KY, is seeking a CNC Machinist to set up and operate CNC mills and lathes for defense manufacturing programs. You will interpret engineering drawings, select tooling, and run first-article and production lots while meeting quality and traceability standards.

The ideal candidate has 2–5 years of CNC experience, strong G-code skills, and the ability to read blueprints and GD&T. ITAR/CMMC compliance and a commitment to safety are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; machinist apprenticeship/technical program preferred.
• 2–5 years CNC machining experience in job-shop or precision manufacturing; defense/aerospace experience preferred.
• Ability to read blueprints, GD&T, and engineering revisions.
• Proficient in setting up and running CNC mills and/or lathes with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, or multi-axis centers to produce precision components.
• Read drawings, GD&T callouts, and work instructions to determine tooling and fixturing.
• Perform first-article inspection and in-process checks with precision instruments.
• Maintain quality records, Certificates of Conformance, and comply with ITAR/CMMC requirements.
• Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean, safe production area.
