About the Opportunity
Air Industries Machining Corp. is a growing aerospace manufacturer seeking an experienced CNC Machining Lead to join our team in Bay Shore, NY.
This is a hands‑on technical leadership position supporting the production of complex, tight‑tolerance aerospace components. The CNC Machining Lead serves as a key technical resource within the machining cell, helping keep equipment running, supporting complex setups, troubleshooting machining problems, coordinating tooling and fixtures, and working with machinists and support teams to maintain safety, quality, and production performance.
This position focuses on machining‑cell execution and technical leadership rather than formal personnel management.
- Monitor machining activity within the cell and help ensure effective execution of assigned production priorities.
- Keep CNC equipment operating effectively and minimize avoidable downtime.
- Support and troubleshoot complex 3‑and 4‑axis CNC milling setups and operations.
- Support advanced multi‑axis machining equipment based on experience and training.
- Troubleshoot tooling, offsets, speeds and feeds, workholding, fixtures, chatter, tool wear, machine conditions, and setup issues.
- Diagnose whether machining problems originate with the setup, tooling, fixture, machine, program, process, or operating technique.
- Make appropriate machine‑level adjustments and minor program edits at the machine within established processes.
- Coordinate required tooling, fixtures, and other resources needed to support machining operations.
- Work with CNC Programming, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and Operations when additional technical support or process changes are required.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and common GD&T requirements.
- Use calipers, micrometers, indicators, and other common precision measuring equipment to support shop‑floor inspection and process control.
- Identify potential quality issues and make appropriate machining adjustments within established processes.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized working environment while reinforcing established safety practices and proper machine‑shop discipline within the cell.
- Provide hands‑on technical guidance and coaching to machinists within the cell.
- Reinforce established setups, machining methods, quality requirements, and process discipline.
- Look for practical opportunities to reduce setup and machining time, improve quality and process reliability, minimize downtime, and improve overall cell performance.
- Communicate production constraints, recurring problems, equipment concerns, and support needs to the appropriate teams.
Core Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to independently set up, operate, and troubleshoot complex CNC milling operations.
- Strong hands‑on experience with 3‑and 4‑axis CNC milling machines.
- Strong understanding of cutting tools, speeds and feeds, offsets, workholding, fixtures, setups, and machining fundamentals.
- Ability to systematically troubleshoot machining problems and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and understand common GD&T requirements.
- Proficiency with common precision measuring equipment, including calipers, micrometers, and indicators.
- Ability to understand CNC programs sufficiently to troubleshoot issues and make appropriate machine‑level adjustments or minor edits within established processes.
- Ability to provide technical leadership and guidance to machinists within the cell.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated ownership, accountability, practical problem‑solving ability, and pride in craftsmanship.
- Commitment to maintaining high standards for safety, quality, process discipline, and machining performance.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands‑on CNC machining experience preferred; demonstrated equivalent capability in independently setting up and troubleshooting complex CNC milling operations will also be considered.
- Previous experience as a CNC Lead, senior machinist, cell lead, or similar technical resource.
- Aerospace or other complex, high‑precision manufacturing experience.
- Experience machining forgings, castings, structural components, and thin‑wall parts.
- Experience machining aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, nickel‑based alloys, and other difficult‑to‑machine materials.
Experience with advanced multi‑axis machining and other CNC equipment is helpful, but we place greater emphasis on strong CNC milling fundamentals, setup capability, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to learn.
