Job description

At St. Luke's, our patients come from all walks of life, and so do we. We are committed to fostering an environment that values the unique strengths, experiences, and perspectives of our team members. Together, we deliver exceptional, patient-centered care to the communities we serve.

Join our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) team and play a vital role in supporting some of our most vulnerable patients and their families. In this role, you will provide direct patient care, assist with daily operations of the unit, and support the care team through Health Unit Coordinator responsibilities.

About the NICU

The NICU is one of the largest units within the hospital, caring for newborns and infants who require specialized medical and surgical care immediately after birth. Patients range from extremely premature infants to those experiencing complications during their transition to life outside the womb.

As a Level IV NICU, we provide the highest level of neonatal care and treat infants requiring complex medical management, specialized therapies, and surgical interventions, including gastrointestinal, neurological, and musculoskeletal procedures. We serve as a regional referral and transport center, receiving patients from across Idaho and surrounding states, while also supporting high-risk deliveries within our hospital.

Our multidisciplinary team includes neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, and other specialists who provide around-the-clock care. The unit is staffed with 24/7 in-house Neonatology coverage, creating a highly collaborative learning environment for caregivers interested in pediatric and neonatal care.

What to Expect Working in This Unit
  • Caring for medically fragile and critically ill newborns in a fast-paced, highly specialized environment.

  • Supporting infants requiring advanced monitoring, respiratory support, feeding assistance, and developmental care.

  • Partnering closely with families during what can be an emotional and stressful time in their lives.

  • Working alongside a collaborative interdisciplinary team dedicated to delivering exceptional neonatal care.

  • Learning specialized skills related to neonatal patient care, family-centered care, and hospital operations.

  • Opportunities to support other areas within the Children's Hospital, including Pediatrics and PICU, when eligible to float.

  • Exposure to complex patient populations and advanced medical care, making this an excellent opportunity for individuals pursuing a future nursing career.

What You Can Expect from This Role
  • Flex 1 position: one 12-hour shift per week

  • Night shift: Typically 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM

  • Night and weekend shift differentials available

  • Perform patient care activities and non-professional nursing services to support the comfort, safety, and well-being of patients

  • Assist with Health Unit Coordinator duties, including communication, documentation support, and coordination of unit activities

  • Work closely with nurses, providers, and interdisciplinary team members
