Job summary

The Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Plains in Vermillion, SD seeks a Unit Director to lead day-to-day operations, support staff, ensure high-quality programs, and maintain a safe, welcoming environment for youth.

This hands-on leader builds relationships with members and families, oversees budgeting, coordinates with senior leadership, and works flexible hours to meet club needs, including summers and afterschool programming.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proven experience working with youth preschool through 12th grade.
• Demonstrated management and supervisory experience in a youth-serving or nonprofit environment.
• Strong leadership presence with the ability to coach, mentor, and hold staff accountable.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
• Deep understanding of youth development and behavior management aligned with BGCA values.
• Ability to provide immediate and reflective feedback to support positive youth development.
• CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain after hire; training provided.
• Must pass a comprehensive background check.
• South Dakota driver license if driving is required.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Club, including staffing, schedules, facility needs, member supervision, and daily routines.
• Ensure members have access to safe, engaging, age-appropriate, high-quality programs.
• Be present throughout the Club and provide hands-on support when needed.
• Monitor membership, attendance, program participation, and required Club documentation.
• Ensure policies, safety requirements, and reporting are followed.
• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, coach, and support staff.
• Develop staff schedules and conduct regular feedback and reviews.
• Communicate with parents regarding Club updates and needs.
• Manage the Unit operating budget and coordinate with leadership on planning and needs.
