Job summary

Subway is seeking a Cloud Database Engineer to administer and optimize our cloud databases across AWS and Azure. You will ensure high availability, disaster recovery, performance tuning, and security compliance while collaborating with application development, cloud engineering, and architecture teams.

You will leverage Terraform to provision infrastructure, work with Azure SQL Database, and contribute to platform improvements.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of database administration experience in an enterprise environment.
• 8+ years of Windows system administration.
• 3+ years of Microsoft SQL Server experience.
• 3+ years designing and testing HA/DR configurations for production database systems.
• 3+ years using Terraform to provision and manage cloud database services.
• Strong hands-on experience with Azure SQL Database.
• Experience with database performance tuning, query optimization, and index design.
• Bachelor’s degree in Technology, CS, Information Systems, or a related field.
• Experience applying AI/ML tools to database performance optimization.

Responsibilities

• Provision, configure, and manage cloud database services including Azure SQL Database.
• Design and implement high-availability and disaster recovery configurations for all database platforms.
• Monitor database performance; identify and resolve bottlenecks through query tuning and index optimization.
• Enforce database security standards including encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, and audit logging.
• Manage database backup, restoration, and point-in-time recovery procedures; conduct regular DR tests.
• Collaborate with application and architecture teams on schema design, capacity planning, and migrations.
• Develop and maintain database runbooks, standards documentation, and change management procedures.
• Evaluate emerging cloud database technologies and provide recommendations for platform improvements.
• Coach Infrastructure colleagues on Active Directory and vulnerability remediation best practices.
