Position Overview
The Clinical Dietitian levels I and II: competently provides and documents nutrition care to patients as applicable to practice area.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
- Registered as a Dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
- For Clinical Dietitian I: May be registry eligible, but must pass the RD exam within the first 6 months of employment in the position.
Advancement and Employment Requirements
- Advancement from Clinical Nutrition I to II is required one year after passing the RD exam.
- Maintenance of RD status with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- CPR training for outpatient nutrition clinic practice.
Experience
- Clinical Dietitian I: Less than one year in an acute care setting.
- Clinical Dietitian II: One or more years in an acute care setting as a Registered Dietitian; experience in outpatient counseling preferred for outpatient positions.
Education and Training
- Required: Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition or related field from an accredited institution.
- Preferred: Specialty certification, training in weight management, motivational interviewing, and clinical research protocols.
Independent Actions and Responsibilities
- Perform nutrition care activities per departmental policies.
- Post one year of registration, may modify diets, order snacks/supplements, manage enteral feedings, and measure patient parameters.
- Communicate with healthcare team and provide staff in-services.
Additional Requirements
- Work weekends and flexible hours, including evenings for pediatric outpatient positions.
- Travel to satellite clinics as needed.
- Work in diverse environments, adhere to the Code of Ethics, and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.
