Job summary

Duke Health is seeking registered nurses to provide patient care across Duke hospitals. You will work with a multidisciplinary team, participate in rounds, and plan nursing care per physician orders and protocols.

Responsibilities include documenting care, supervising staff, educating patients and families, and rotating through Emergency, Medical/Surgical, Critical Care, Cardiac, and Oncology units. Current NC RN licensure, BLS, and ACLS required.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program (BSN/ADN/Diploma).
  • 12 months of clinical nursing experience in the relevant area.
  • BLS certification; ACLS within 90 days.
  • Nurses without a BSN must enroll in BSN within 2 years of start date; complete within seven years.
  • Attendance at new-hire orientation Monday–Friday.

Job description

  • Provide patient care and support for a variety of patient populations across Duke hospitals
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team and participate in patient rounds
  • Plan and provide professional nursing care according to medical and nursing plans of care, physician orders, policies, and procedures
  • Provide nursing services to patients and families within the scope of an RN defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing
  • Plan, provide, supervise, and document nursing care using the nursing process
  • Individualize care plans based on patient assessment and response to care
  • Delegate tasks and supervise licensed and unlicensed care providers
  • Assist nursing personnel and act as team leader or charge nurse when assigned
  • Monitor and maintain the environment of care, equipment, and material resources
  • Maintain competencies, identify learning needs, and pursue professional development
  • Act as a preceptor and support development of team members and learners
  • Identify and participate in clinical or operational performance improvement activities
  • Document assessments, care plans, interventions, evaluations, and patient-status changes
  • Assess acute and chronically ill patients’ nursing needs
  • Educate patients and families
  • Collaborate with patients, families, visitors, healthcare professionals, physicians, administrators, and leadership
  • Float to specialty areas including Emergency Services, Medical/Surgical, Critical Care, Cardiac Services, and Oncology
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Associate’s Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma Program
  • Twelve months of appropriate clinical nursing experience required in the area of expertise
  • Gig A: 1–2 years’ experience; commitment of 2 shifts in an 8-week schedule
  • Gig B: 2+ years’ experience; commitment of 4 shifts in an 8-week schedule
  • Gig C: 5 or more years’ experience; commitment of 6 shifts in an 8-week schedule
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification
  • American Heart Association ACLS within 90 days
  • Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or current compact RN licensure to practice in North Carolina
  • Registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or higher must enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of start date and complete it within seven years
  • Attendance at new-hire orientation Monday–Friday
  • Completion of virtual, in-person, and online education
