Overview

Since 1937, Alton Memorial Hospital has cared for residents in Alton, Illinois, and the surrounding communities in a five-county area. Starting as a land gift from the Smith family, Alton Memorial today is a full-service acute care hospital offering a variety of inpatient and outpatient services, including surgery, medical imaging, heart services, cancer care, rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency care, ambulance services, and more.

The Medical Care Unit (MCU) is a 34-private-room floor located on the 3rd floor of the New Duncan Wing. General medical care includes, but is not limited to, disorders related to the gastrointestinal, respiratory, renal, neurological, and dermatologic systems.

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of nursing standards.

Responsibilities

1. Promotes patient and family-centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on managing their illness or injury, including post-treatment home care and medication administration.
2. Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. Engages in professional development.
3. Develops, implements, and documents individualized care plans with clear goals, collaborating with the interprofessional team, patients, families, or caregivers, and ensuring communication across the continuum of care.
4. Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to care standards. Considers patient preferences, values, and barriers to involvement in care, including cultural and spiritual needs.
5. This position is safety-sensitive. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is essential.
