Overview

Since 1937, Alton Memorial Hospital has cared for residents in Alton, Illinois, and the surrounding communities in a five-county area. Starting as a land gift from the Smith family, Alton Memorial is now a full-service acute care hospital offering inpatient and outpatient services such as surgery, medical imaging, heart services, cancer care, rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency care, and ambulance services.

The emergency department (ED) provides care to patients of all ages, from neonates to geriatrics, handling cases from minor injuries to cardio-pulmonary arrests. The ED uses a 5-tier triage system to prioritize patients based on severity, and it is the only hospital-based ambulance service in the region.

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within the standards of nursing care.

Responsibilities
  • Promotes patient and family-centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and families on managing their illness or injury, including post-treatment home care and medication administration.
  • Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. Engages in professional development.
  • Develops, implements, and documents individualized care plans with clear goals, collaborating with the interprofessional team, patient, family, or caregiver, following established standards.
  • Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs, considering patient preferences, values, and cultural backgrounds.
  • This position is safety-sensitive; the ability to work alertly and safely at all times is essential.
