Collects, processes, and analyzes biological specimens according to defined procedures, effectively integrating pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic components in the process. Follows established protocols for quality assurance and quality improvement.
Responsibilities
- Performs routine and special analysis of specimens according to established protocols. Collaborates with other departments to improve workflow efficiencies and expedite patient care.
- Recognizes abnormal or inconsistent test results and follows appropriate procedures.
- Adheres to protocols for critical/panic values.
- Reviews co-worker reports when appropriate for release.
Laboratory Competencies
- Demonstrates and maintains competencies across all testing areas, including clinical departments and limited Microbiology.
Quality Assurance
- Performs quality control procedures per protocol.
- Implements corrective actions and documents findings. Alerts supervisors to trends and potential issues.
- Participates in department quality improvement projects.
- Assists with test method comparisons, validation studies, and data collection for quality management.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
- Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Maintains inventory levels and communicates shortages.
- Identifies and troubleshoots instrument malfunctions and reagent issues.
- Contacts service/vendor for repairs and explores alternative testing methods independently.
Continuing Education / Technical Resource
- Serves as a technical resource for staff and clinicians.
- Participates in continuing education and presents in-service sessions.
- Engages with clinicians during off-hours for test-related questions.
Specimen Collection and Processing
- Performs venipuncture for routine, timed, and stat orders.
- Ensures proper specimen identification and follows protocols for collection and reporting.
- Assesses specimen quality and takes corrective actions as needed.
Other Responsibilities
- Utilizes computer systems effectively for testing and suggests process improvements.
- Performs additional duties as assigned and supports special projects.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Education: Must meet NYS criteria for Clinical Laboratory Technician.
- Licenses: Current NYS licensure or pending application with a Limited Permit.
- Infection Control: Uses universal precautions and PPE as required.
