Summary
The Clinical Lab Assistant reports to a senior tech or manager. Under general supervision and with appropriate training and documented competency, can perform various complex laboratory testing in the assigned lab section. The CLA may have tasks in all phases of lab testing and daily operations, including preanalytical, analytical, and post-analytical responsibilities. CLA should demonstrate a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret tests and preferably have some collegiate experience in the sciences, especially as it relates to the laboratory.

Responsibilities

  1. Receives specimens, confirms patient's identification, and validates the appropriateness of patient samples. Performs add-ons, reprints labels, and aliquots samples, exercising care to avoid contamination or mislabeling.
  2. Understands clinical tests and appropriate handling of the required samples and their methodologies.
  3. Understands the clinical significance of test results. Collaborates with other laboratory staff to confirm unusual test results or procedure variations. Reviews with Specialist or Manager as needed, following detailed instructions or procedures. Records and reports test results to the physician or RIDOH as required.
  4. Assists in instructing and orienting new employees.
  5. Familiarizes with new test procedures as ordered or detailed by the team.
  6. Troubleshoots operational problems, including order conflicts or sample integrity issues.
  7. Performs routine functions such as loading samples onto automation systems, responding to pneumatic tube systems, and handling blood culture samples. Performs waived testing.
  8. Performs daily maintenance on equipment, calibrates instruments, and conducts quality control.
  9. In Blood Bank, handles blood products, maintains inventory, liaises with the OR, and ensures testing is completed for OR patients.
  10. Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment and work areas.
  11. Helps maintain inventory, including stocking supplies.
  12. Participates in the Quality Management program, including data entry and result verification.
  13. Complies with all safety, infection control, and HIPAA guidelines in accordance with policies and procedures.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Information

Basic Knowledge: Bachelor's degree in a lab science such as chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology.

Experience: Collegiate experience in the sciences, especially related to laboratory work.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Ability to operate equipment, interpret procedures, and maintain accuracy. Computer skills for navigating lab systems. Physical and visual dexterity, ability to stand and work in various settings, and exposure to hazardous materials.

Independent Action: Performs independently within department policies, referring complex problems to senior staff as needed.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.
