Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Clinical Lab Assistant to join our patient‑centered lab team. The role involves processing specimens, entering results into the LIS, and ensuring accurate data entry and timely reporting to clinicians.

Responsibilities include assisting the main lab staff, performing waived tests under supervision, and maintaining quality control, refrigerator logs, and order follow‑ups. High school diploma required; one year of lab/phlebotomy experience preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma.
• Preferred: 1 year of experience in a general lab, specimen processing or phlebotomy.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the main lab staff, other departments, nurses and providers to ensure excellent patient care.
• Receives specimens into the laboratory information system.
• Inputs and retrieves lab results in the LIS or hospital system.
• Register specimen dropoffs in LIS with accurate data entry.
• Distribute specimens to testing areas.
• Identify and solve problems with supervision as needed.
• Perform waived testing under direction.
• Ensure correct sample type and container for testing orders.
• Communicate rejections and critical results to clinical staff and document accordingly.
• Review refrigerator temperatures and QC/QA records as needed.
• Adhere to lab procedures and follow up on outstanding orders.
• Pull AP slides for second opinions and log material back into Epic.
• Answer lab phone calls and triage appropriately.
• Coordinate courier pickups as needed.
