Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines is seeking a Lab Assistant to support multiple laboratory departments by assisting staff in collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of tests necessary for patient diagnosis.

This full-time evening shift schedule runs Monday-Thursday 12:30pm-9pm with rotating weekends and holidays; requirements include HS diploma and laboratory experience, plus strong computer skills and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills and ability to learn new systems quickly.
• Must be comfortable working in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
• Must possess honesty, integrity, and caring to support MercyOne's mission.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures and specimen collection as appropriate for patient age.
• Accepts specimens and requisitions and manages add‑on orders.
• Identifies patients and specimens with two identifiers and labels correctly.
• Registers and logs specimens in the LIS and documents appropriately.
• Performs specimen processing and documentation per protocols.
• Assists in resolving problematic specimens and test orders with staff and clients.
• Follows safety, infection control, and chemical handling procedures.
• Operates laboratory information systems to support data entry and workflow.
• Contributes to general laboratory operations and department projects as assigned.
