Job summary

Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB) LTBB Clinic seeks a Family Medicine physician to provide outpatient primary care to Native American patients in northern Michigan. Responsibilities include patient encounters, documentation in EPIC, teaching and coordinating referrals with the LTBB care program.

The role requires Board Certification in Family Medicine, MD/DO eligibility, and a minimum seven years of outpatient experience. BLS certification is required; Indian preference applies.

SUMMARY:

The LTBB Clinic provides high-quality primary care services to Native American patients in northern Michigan. Our physicians support an underserved community by delivering culturally responsive preventive care, chronic disease management, and relationship-centered services that improve patients’ health and quality of life.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for ensuring that patients receive exemplary care and are treated with respect and in a timely manner. Represents the LTBB Health Clinic in a professional and positive manner.
• Recognizes and is sensitive to the cultural dimension inherent in the practice of medicine in Native American communities. Must be culturally competent and meet the health literacy needs of target populations.
• Contributes to a positive work environment with professional, respectful, and thoughtful interactions with fellow employees.
• Provide primary care outpatient, clinical and medical services for the LTBB Health Clinic.
• Complete procedures within the clinic setting.
• Refer patients as needed for specialized health services not provided by the LTBB Health clinic, coordinating with the LTBB Purchased and Referred Care program as necessary.
• Document patient encounters in EPIC electronic health record system within prescribed deadlines after each visit.
• Support mid-level providers, medical students, and resident physicians in providing medical care to LTBB clinic patients with guidance and recommendations when requested.
• Monitor patients’ condition, progress, and revaluate treatment as necessary.
• Provides health education to patients and families; instruct patients and their families about best practices at home. Coordinate with other health department programs for resources.
• Explain procedures, treatments and test results with patients.
• Provide technical and clinical support to LTBB Clinic nursing staff.
• Follow LTBB Clinic policies and procedures.
• Practice medicine in accordance with the current standards of practice and criteria adopted by the American Board of Family Medicine.
• Have and maintain BLS certification. Performs emergency lifesaving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar emergencies.
• Follow current safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
• Enhance professional growth and development through participation in relevant educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
• Outpatient weekdays. On rare occasions may receive notification from laboratory regarding critical labs and work with triage nurse to notify patients.
• Work on team based, quality Improvement projects for Clinic as requested.
• Other related duties as assigned by the Medical Director and within the scope of medical/clinical services being provided.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

State of Michigan Board of Medicine License to practice as a physician required. Certification in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine required. Minimum seven years experience as a Family Medicine Physician in an outpatient setting, including performing in-office procedures. Prefer training and experience in culturally diverse environment; preferably with Native Americans.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Current Physician’s License. Board of Pharmacy Controlled Substance License. Board certification in Family Medicine.

COMMENTS:

Indian preference will apply (Preference will be given to qualified Native American applicants in accordance with the LTBB Indian Preference Statute). Candidates must pass a comprehensive background investigation. Individual must take a TB test, and get annual influenza vaccination due to working in a healthcare environment. LTBB is a scent free environment.

On Sept. 21, 1994, the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB) was federally reaffirmed with the signing of Public Law 103-324. The Tribe is governed by a nine-member Tribal Council.
