Job summary

Millcreek City is seeking a part-time Climbing Wall Supervisor to assist with the daily operations of the outdoor climbing wall at Millcreek Common. Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 3 years' experience in a climbing gym or outdoor climbing.
• Minimum 2 years working at a climbing gym or similar recreation.
• Two of last five years managing staff or contractors in facilities management preferred.
• OSHA Working at Heights certification preferred.
• CWI Level 3 Certification preferred.
• Dry tooling experience preferred.

Under the direction of the Senior Recreation Manager, the Climbing Wall Supervisor is responsible for assisting with the oversight of daily operations at the outdoor climbing wall at Millcreek Common. This role encompasses facility upkeep and maintenance, providing support for staffing and scheduling, leading customer relations efforts, and managing the performance of service contractors to ensure smooth and efficient operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Support operations for the climbing wall and associated programs at Millcreek Common.
2. Supervise Recreation Shift Leads and Crew Members (including scheduling, safety, training, and climbing/belaying training).
3. Provide supervision of climbing wall participants including belaying, spotting, etc.
4. Ensure climbing wall is secured from climbers after hours.
5. Assist in overseeingprogramming associated with the climbing wall such as belay clinics, top rope or lead program training and testing, summer camp programs, and other future programs that stem from the climbing wall.
6. Teach and demonstrate proper use of all climbing wall equipment (harnesses, belay devices, shoes, etc.) to participants.
7. Provide proper safety protocols, customer service, and other workforce training modules required for Millcreek personnel.
8. Assist in overseeing the maintenance and upkeep of the climbing wall, including but not only to, wall panel replacement, t-bolt replacement/rethreading, speed wall equipment upkeep, route setting, belay device servicing, and installing top rope, lead anchors, and equipment.
9. Notify management of any faulty or old equipment in need of replacement or retirement.
10. Assist in defining, maintaining, and enforcing policies and procedures to support recreational programs for guests at Millcreek Common.
11. Support Recreation Managers to ensure that day to day operations, larger events, and recreation programs across Millcreek Common run smoothly.
12. Assist in the management and enforcement of the Rules of Conduct established for Millcreek Common.
13. Work with the Facilities Department to ensure day-to-day maintenance of the common and that facilities are clean and operating for guests visiting Millcreek Common.
14. Assist in managing the facility’s supporting inventory of tools, equipment, vehicles, and consumable items, possibly supported by use of asset management digital platforms.
15. Assist in purchasing, maintaining, and servicing recreation sport equipment.
16. Assist the Climbing Wall Recreation Manager in responding to general communication related to climbing via [e-mail], phone, email, and other online inquiries and reviews.
17. Ensure satisfactory performance of contractor provided services.
18. Respond to/resolve the great majority of escalated customer, operational, and facility-related issues.
19. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education and Experience:

• a. High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
• b. A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a climbing gym or outdoor climbing experience required.
• c. A minimum of two (2) years of working at a climbing gym or similar recreational activity required.
• d. Two (2) of the last five (5) years managing or supervising staff, contracted tradesmen, or service contractors in the facilities management field preferred.
• e. OSHA “Working at Heights” certification preferred.
• f. Climbing Wall Association “CWI Level 3 Certification” preferred.
• g. Dry tooling experience preferred.

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• a. Proficient top rope and lead belayer.
• b. In depth climbing knowledge including knots, hitches, and belaying with an Assisted Breaking Device (ABD).
• c. Route setting experience with ropes.
• d. Knowledge of climbing equipment and proper use based on manufacturer’s recommendation.
• e. Knowledge of principles for providing high-level customer service.
• f. Ability to use tact and diplomacy under stressful situations associated with public or stakeholder interaction.
• g. Ability to make decisions and use good judgement.
• h. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, volunteers, city elected officials, city department heads and related agency contacts, and the public.
• i. Ability to operate a personal computer and standard competency using Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
• j. Competency in communicating clearly and concisely with City personnel both orally and in writing.
• k. Ability to reliably manage established processes and policies, and shape their improvement, as necessary.
• l. Ability to manage and attain optimal performance from the operations team, using sound principles of team leadership and collaboration.
• m. Demonstrate an ability to share workload with collaborators.
• n. Ability and willingness to train and to transfer knowledge to colleagues, subordinates, volunteers, and contractors for successful delivery and group satisfaction.
• o. Ability to lead and operate self-sufficiently, without the support or supervision of supervisors or City leaders outside City business hours.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Environment:

Work is performed in a mixed indoor/outdoor environment. The employee should be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and handle or move more weight with the assistance of appropriate equipment. The nature of community recreation and events venue facility management requires the employee to work outside of traditional business hours and workweek. These requirements will be scheduled with advanced notice.

2. Physical:

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in transitional settings between sitting at a workstation, working at heights on or inside the climbing wall, and moving from indoors to outdoors; stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and twisting while performing tasks; lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling light to moderate amounts of weight; occasionally operating office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of personal computer equipment; operating material handling equipment, utility vehicles, including but not limited to, a forklift, general utility hauling vehicles, and the Zamboni (ice re-surfacing vehicle); and verbally communicating to exchange information.

5. Attendance:

The Adventure Hub is the employee’s headquarters and primary location for work. The employee is expected to report to and maintain contact with city personnel during shifts that overlap normal business hours Monday through Friday, and to operate self-sufficiently outside of these hours, by arrangement.
