Job summary

Apex Park and Recreation District is seeking a part-time indoor rock climbing coach to instruct weekly climbing classes, demonstrate skills, supervise participants, and assist with events while delivering excellent guest service.

You will keep attendance and records, monitor safety, inspect walls and equipment, report incidents, cooperate with the rock wall lead and recreation coordinator, and be available evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • 1-2 years of rock-climbing experience with ability to pass staff requirements.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service to participants and members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively when enforcing policies.
  • Knowledge of the sport of rock climbing.
  • Ability to work with parents.
  • Ability to manage time.
  • Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned areas and make safety judgments.
  • Clean and neat appearance.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution.
  • Acceptable background information including criminal conviction history.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct climbing classes weekly.
  • Demonstrate, instruct, and supervise participants during lessons, classes, open climbing, and events.
  • Assist and support the rock wall lead and recreation coordinator.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for all participants.
  • Keep track of students' whereabouts at all times.
  • Log incidents and apply appropriate disciplinary techniques as needed.
  • Communicate with parents, supervisors, co-workers, and participants.
  • Maintain daily attendance and records.
  • Inspect and perform general maintenance of the climbing wall and equipment.

Job description

Coaches/instructs members in the sport of indoor rock climbing at Apex Park and Recreation District:

  • Responsible for instructing climbing classes every week.
  • Demonstrates, instructs, and actively supervises participants during lessons, classes, open climbing, and other events.
  • Responsible for assisting and supporting the rock wall lead and the recreation coordinator.
  • Actively monitors and maintains a safe and secure environment for all participants.
  • Accountable for the whereabouts of students at all times.
  • Uses appropriate disciplinary techniques with participants and logs all incidents.
  • Effectively interacts and communicates with parents, supervisors, co-workers, and participants.
  • Accurately keeps daily attendance and maintains necessary records.
  • Conducts inspections and general maintenance of the climbing wall, auto belays, and all associated climbing equipment.
  • Must remain composed and make sound judgment decisions during emergencies and non-emergency situations.
  • Responds to all emergencies by the established emergency procedures.
  • Reports directly to the recreation coordinator.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • 1-2 years of previous rock-climbing experience (with the ability to pass staff requirements)
  • Must be able to provide excellent guest service to participants in the program and members and guests of Apex Park and Recreation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively when enforcing policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Must know the sport of rock climbing.
  • Ability to work with parents.
  • Ability to manage time.
  • Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned areas and make judgments related to safety.
  • Clean and neat appearance.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS - in addition to the required minimum qualifications:
  • American Mountain Guides Association, Climbing Wall Association, or equivalent rock guiding/instructor qualifications.
  • Knowledge of climbing knots, belay devices, and advanced climbing techniques.
  • Experience working with children five years and older.
  • Available to work at least 6 hours weekly, predominantly evenings and weekends.
  • Knowledge of sports and coaching/teaching.
  • CPR/first aid/AED certification or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.No specific education requirement. All levels welcome.
  • Noise levels range from moderate to loud, often due to active children, group interactions, or busy transportation settings.
  • Must have sufficient strength, agility, stamina, and flexibility to lift, carry or move a variety of objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work while crouching, kneeling, bending, stooping, or assisting children for long periods of time.
  • Must have sufficient hearing to be able to hear and discriminate differing sounds in a variety of situations.
  • Sufficient vision to be able to discriminate between colors, size, and type of objects and people, both close and distant.
Physical Activities
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to maintain balance and coordination while assisting with physical activities or working on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to climb, crawl, or maneuver in tight spaces to complete maintenance or activity-related tasks.
