Job summary
The City of Lakewood is seeking a Climbing Lead Instructor to provide on-site supervision and lead climbing programs, acting as a liaison among participants, parents, instructors and City staff.
The role emphasizes instruction in both indoor gym climbing and outdoor climbing, with a focus on safety, curriculum development, and youth engagement. Must be 18+, belay certified, and CPR/First Aid certifications preferred or to be completed within the first 3 months.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical knowledge of the sport of rock climbing.
- Technical knowledge of outdoor rock climbing.
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications are preferred or must be completed within first 3 months of hire date.
Responsibilities
- Provide on-site supervision of programs and staff to ensure quality programming is conducted.
- Maintain all necessary forms, paperwork and attendance records for participants as requested.
- Act as an on-site liaison to assist other instructors, facility staff, parents, and participants as needed.
- Ability to instruct all climbing programs offered.
- Experience setting ropes at outdoor crags, and ability to instruct participants in outdoor climbing is required.
- Maintain a recreational focus in the gym at all times.
- Problem solve, communicate and mediate issues between parents, participants, staff, facility and the general public.
- Attend to accidents and emergencies/crisis; complete necessary reports for all incidents.
- Consult with Supervisor as necessary regarding city, department and division policies and procedures.
- Maintain on-going communication with Supervisor regarding program status.
- Assist instructors in teaching skills and rules to participants.
- Maintain cleanliness and order of the program area.
- Inventory and maintain all program equipment.
- Assist in the development and enforcement of policies and procedures, emphasizing safety.
- Ensure that closing duties are completed each evening.
- Distribute program material as directed.
- Ability to make decisions and enforce policies to ensure safety of staff and participants at all times.
- Must attend mandatory staff meetings.
- Assist Supervisor with continued program development as needed.

The primary responsibility of the Climbing Lead Instructor is to provide on-site supervision for programs in addition to teaching responsibilities. The Lead Instructor will also provide support for participants and other instructors as well as act as a liaison between participants, parents, instructors, and the City of Lakewood.

Monday-Thursday evenings
Saturdays 9am-1:30pm
Adhere to facility scheduling.
Demonstrate creative ability in age-appropriate class design.
Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Previous outdoor instruction or guiding experience is desired.
Ability to perform the basic maneuvers of the sport of climbing.
Experience working with youth in a coaching/instructional capacity.
Ideal candidates will have experience developing curriculum and training.
Good vision, balance, coordination, arm/hand/leg movements.
Ability to give good, clear verbal direction to groups of 10 or more.
Ability to motivate and work with children and adults of all abilities.
Ability to follow supervisor’s instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to deal effectively with emergency situations.
Ability to provide direction and supervision to subordinate staff.
Ability to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to be flexible in work schedule.
Background check is required.
Ability to lift and carry floor mats/equipment in and out of closet with assistance.
Ability to stand, walk, run, sit, bend, stoop, squat, twist, reach.
Ability to work with participants at different heights and angles.
Must be able to communicate with staff and participants via phone and in person.
Must be able to instruct, observe, and demonstrate all class program aspects.
Must be able to observe potential dangerous maneuvers.
Must remember participants’ names and abilities, follow-up with participants, parents, staff, and recall how to respond to emergency situations.
Must remember policies and procedures and apply them accordingly.
Must be able to read accurately.
Must be able to demonstrate logic and verbally communicate.
Must be able to demonstrate good judgement and assessment of skills.
Must be able to demonstrate sound decision making skills and be reactive to the needs of the participants in providing intervention to injury.
Work is performed at an indoor rock wall, various crags in Clear Creek and Jefferson Counties, and a general office environment with considerable background noise. Interaction with participants and parents, co-workers and general public.
