Job summary

Spotsylvania County is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator/Truck Driver to operate commercial vehicles (Class A) used for refuse, recyclables, and related transfers. The role requires adherence to DOT regulations and county policies, with responsibilities including pre/post-trip inspections, routine maintenance, and timely reporting of unsafe conditions.

The position requires a valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and air-brake endorsement, plus a forklift cert within six months.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent with 1–3 years of experience operating Class A/B commercial vehicles.
• Valid Class A CDL with air-brake endorsement.
• Tanker endorsement must be obtained within six months of hire.
• Pre-employment DOT drug screen and DOT physical required.
• Forklift certification within six months of hire.
• Basic computer and technical skills.
• CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Operate one or more commercial vehicles with Class A license in accordance with county policies and DOT regulations.
• Perform pre- and post-trip inspections and document inspections.
• Conduct preventive maintenance and minor repairs on trucks and equipment.
• Report unsafe equipment or situations to Supervisors.
• Transport containers, waste, and equipment; collect various container types as assigned.
• Fuels and cleans trucks; maintain daily logs for hauling and maintenance.
• Attend trainings and meetings as required; report incidents promptly.
