Job summary

ERIE in Maryland seeks an experienced Claims Manager to supervise and develop a team of claims professionals, oversee designated operations, and ensure compliance with policy and regulatory requirements.

The role emphasizes leadership, performance assessments, claims procedures, and collaboration with Claims Leadership to resolve complex coverage questions while supporting business strategy.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with six years claims experience.
  • Associate degree with four years claims experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree with two years claims experience.
  • Appropriate state licenses including ability to secure multiple licenses.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Experience using estimating software preferred.
  • Experience in a leadership role preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train, and monitor assigned claims adjusters and other claims personnel.
  • Assist Claims Leadership in overseeing and handling claims.
  • Manage overall operations of a designated area.
  • Interview, hire, train, and direct personnel.
  • Prepare and conduct performance assessments, coordinate discipline, and oversee employee development.
  • Review claims and adjusters’ files for coverage and adequate reserves in accordance with company policy.
  • Answer claims questions, provide additional services, and take action as necessary.
  • Review claim correspondence and counsel on further action.
  • Resolve coverage and unusual questions within designated authority and conduct related research.
  • Maintain and apply working knowledge of adjusters’ files and statutory laws.
  • Recommend and participate in developing and evaluating claims procedures with the Claims Manager.
  • Handle claim complaints and inquiries.
  • Assist the Claims Manager and act on the manager’s behalf as necessary.
  • Direct processing of legal papers served upon ERIE involving claims action and direct outside legal counsel activities.
  • Assist with trial preparation and attend pre-trial functions and trials as necessary.
  • Review reports, payments, and buyer information; negotiate with salvage auctions and salvage yards when required.
  • Contribute to projects, initiatives, teams, and assignments supporting business strategy and operational outcomes.
  • Serve on the Catastrophe Team and travel on short notice as needed.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent and six years of claims related experience required; or Associate degree and four years of claims related experience required; or Bachelor’s degree and two years of claims related experience required
  • Appropriate license(s) as required by applicable state(s), including the ability to secure and maintain dual or multiple licenses as business needs require
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Experience using estimating software preferred
  • Experience in a leadership role preferred
  • Completion of Associate in Claims (AIC) designation preferred
  • Ability to serve on the Catastrophe Team, including short-notice travel to other locations for periods exceeding two consecutive weeks
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required
  • Regular and predictable onsite presence may be an essential job function
  • Driving; Occasional (<20%)
  • Manual keying/data entry/inputting information/computer use; Often (20-50%)
