Job summary

Maricopa County is seeking a Civil Paralegal in our Behavioral Health Practice, based at the Valleywise Behavioral Health Center in Maryvale. You will support attorneys with court proceedings, witness preparation, and case file management, ensuring deadlines are met with accuracy.

Ideal candidates hold an associate or higher in paralegal studies, plus paralegal experience; bachelor’s or ABA JD is a plus. This on-site role offers tuition reimbursement, strong work-life balance, and ample growth

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or related field required.
  • Two years of paralegal or legal support experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree plus paralegal studies certification or ABA JD is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys with court proceedings and trial preparation, including witness summaries, organization of exhibits, securing evidence and documentation, deposition abstracts, subpoenas and witness notifications.
  • Assist attorneys in compiling annotations, indexes, and provisions of statutes, cases, and administrative decisions.
  • Review, organize, index, and Bates-stamp pertinent documents for disclosure/discovery and for use in court.
  • Conduct investigations and fact-finding.
  • Assist in or conduct witness interviews, collect relevant documents and records; summarize information in detailed written form for attorneys.
  • Analyze, organize, review, and verify records and other documents obtained through the discovery process.
  • Attend continuing legal education seminars and in-house training.

About the Position

As a Civil Paralegal in our Behavioral Health Practice, you will play a vital role in delivering comprehensive trial support and ensuring seamless legal operations. Operating primarily out of the Valleywise Behavioral Health Center in Maryvale, this position requires a blend of sharp legal knowledge—spanning Arizona and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, legal terminology, statutory research, and case law application—with practical court compliance skills. In this fast-paced role, you will perform several functions simultaneously in a planned, organized, and accurate manner to consistently meet critical deadlines. You’ll synthesize complex information from diverse sources, conduct witness interviews, organize case files, manage document scanning, resolve calendaring conflicts, and liaise directly with hospital personnel.   • We Require Associate’s degree in paralegal studies/legal assistant, or a related field + Two years of experience in legal support or related experience
  • Certificate in Paralegal Studies – 2 years of legal support experience needed
  • Bachelor’s or higher in paralegal studies, legal assistant, or a related field – no experience needed
  • Bachelor’s or higher in an unrelated field + an Associate or Certification in paralegal studies – no experience needed
  • Two years of paralegal experience + Two years of legal support experience
  • We Also Value Bachelor's Degree in any field and a certificate of completion from a Legal Assistant or Paralegal studies program AND two years of experience as a legal assistant supporting attorneys in a civil trial practice
  • Bachelor’s or higher in paralegal studies and/or a JD from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved program AND two years of experience as a legal assistant supporting attorneys in a civil trial practice
Job Contributions
  • Assist attorneys with court proceedings and trial preparation, including preparation of witness summaries, organization of exhibits, securing evidence and documentation, deposition abstracts, subpoenas and witness notifications.
  • Assist attorneys in compiling annotations, indexes, and provisions of statutes, cases, and administrative decisions.

Working Conditions

Office setting which may require extended periods of sitting to perform tasks May be required to drive personal or county-owned vehicle to travel to and from various county locations Ability to move up to 20 pounds from floor to waist and pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds a distance of up to 100 feet
