Job summary

Mead & Hunt is offering a full-time, limited-term civil engineering internship based in Chicago, IL. The intern will support engineers, technicians and surveyors on airport projects, including inspections, measurements, and report preparation, with frequent travel across IL, WI, MI, and IN.

The role requires at least two semesters of civil engineering coursework, a valid driver's license, and willingness to travel 50–80% of the time. Hourly compensation ranges from $18.00 to $25.00.

As a result of our continued growth, we have an exciting opportunity for a full-time, limited-term civil engineering intern to perform construction inspection services on airport projects. This position will be based at our office in Chicago, IL and involves frequent travel to various construction project sites throughout the states of IL, WI, MI, and IN. The anticipated internship period is expected to begin May/June 2027 and end by August/September 2027.

This intern will be responsible for assisting engineers, technicians, and surveyors with civil engineering projects in the following areas:

• Assisting engineers, technicians, and surveyors with civil airport projects including taxiways, runways, aprons, etc.
• Performing measurements and quantity calculations and preparing pay estimates
• Assisting with project report preparation
• Performing field inspection, documentation, and survey work
• Some technical research and writing
• Other tasks as assigned.

A valid driver's license, the ability to pass background checks to gain access to airport sites, and frequent travel to construction project sites approximately 50%-80% of the time (may also include overnight stays) will be required.

Successful candidates must have completed at least two semesters of college-level coursework in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, enterprise systems, construction management or other related field from an accredited college or university by date of hire.

The ideal candidate will have experience with any/all the following:

• Construction field experience including observation and documentation
• Previous internships involving construction, DOT projects, surveying and/or civil site inspections
• Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office and Civil3D software
• Understanding of basic grading and testing processes
• Knowledge of airport planning and/or design
• Survey tasks
• Civil/survey engineering coursework

Mead & Hunt will not sponsor a visa (H-1B, etc.) for this position.

Hourly Rate Range: $18.00 - $25.00 - Actual compensation may vary due to other factors such as: experience, skill set or location.
