Job summary

Mead & Hunt, Inc. seeks a limited-term, full-time civil engineering intern to support construction inspection on aviation projects based in the greater Madison, WI area.

The internship runs May/June 2027 through August/September 2027. Candidates should have completed at least two semesters of civil engineering coursework and be prepared to travel extensively to project sites. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil3D, and MS Office is preferred.

Qualifications

• Two semesters of college-level coursework in civil engineering or related field required.
• Available for May/June 2027 through August/September 2027 internship.
• Valid driver's license and ability to pass background checks; travel 95–100%.
• Experience with AutoCAD, Civil3D, and Microsoft Office preferred.
• Interest in civil aviation projects and field inspection.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers, technicians, and surveyors on civil aviation projects (taxiways, runways, aprons).
• Perform measurements, quantity calculations, and prepare pay estimates.
• Assist with project report preparation and documentation.
• Conduct field inspection, surveying, and data collection.
• Perform basic research and writing as needed.
• Handle other tasks as assigned.

As a result of our expansive growth, we have a position available for a limited-term, full-time civil engineering intern to perform construction inspection on construction sites for aviation projects based in the greater Madison, WI area and other project sites located within the state of WI starting in May/June 2027 and ending in August/September 2027.

This intern will be responsible for assisting engineers, technicians, and surveyors with civil engineering projects in the following areas:

• Assisting engineers, technicians, and surveyors with civil aviation projects including taxiways, runways, aprons, etc.
• Performing measurements and quantity calculations and preparing pay estimates
• Assisting with project report preparation
• Performing field inspection, documentation, and survey work
• Some technical research and writing
• Other tasks as assigned.

A valid driver's license, the ability to pass background checks to gain access to airport sites, and frequent travel to construction project sites approximately 95-100% of the time (may also include overnight stays) will be required.

Successful candidates must have completed at least two semesters of college-level coursework in civil engineering, hydrology, geotechnical, municipal, environmental engineering, or related field from an accredited college or university by date of hire.

The ideal candidate will have experience with any/all the following:

• Construction field experience including observation and documentation
• Previous internships involving construction, DOT projects, surveying and/or civil site inspections
• Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office and Civil3D software
• Understanding of basic grading and testing processes
• Knowledge of airport planning and/or design
• Survey tasks
• Civil/survey engineering coursework
