Job summary

EMH&T in Columbus, OH is seeking a Civil Engineering CAD Technician to join the Transportation Partnerships team. The role drafts technical design components, layouts, concepts, and detailed drawings from notes and sketches for civil infrastructure projects.

The position collaborates with engineers on street, sidewalk, bike path, and utility improvements, using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and MicroStation. A strong eye for detail and effective communication are essential.

Qualifications

• Some technical education or relevant CAD training.
• Experience with CAD platforms such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ARC/INFO or GIS.
• Basic geometry and drafting concepts for drawings.

Responsibilities

• Produce detailed 2D and 3D drawings using CAD software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation).
• Prepare plans, profiles, cross-sections, drainage and utility plans for civil infrastructure.
• Update drawings based on engineer markups and design changes.
• Maintain drawing accuracy and adherence to drafting standards.
• Assist with estimating quantities for pavement and earthwork.
• Ensure version control and document revisions.
• Incorporate survey data, GIS info, and field notes into design files.
• Perform self-checks and peer reviews for accuracy and specs.
• Identify design conflicts and communicate with engineering team; may visit sites.
• Stay current with software updates and drafting best practices.
• Prepare exhibits for layouts, reports, discussions, and client meetings.

Job description

EMH&T is currently seeking a Civil Engineering CAD Technician to join our Transportation Partnerships team located in Columbus, OH.

Our CAD Technician works collaboratively with the engineering team to draft technical engineering design components, assist with preliminary and completed layouts, design concepts, and detailed design drawings from technical notes, sketches, and/or other drawings.

The Transportation Partnerships Technician works on projects related to street improvements, intersections, sidewalks, bike paths, and utility improvements.

Responsibilities

• Produce detailed 2D and 3D drawings using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation).
• Prepare plans, profiles, cross‑sections, drainage plans, utility profiles, grading, and construction details for civil infrastructure projects.
• Update and revise drawings based on engineer markups, design changes, and project requirements.
• Maintain drawing accuracy, consistency, and adherence to company and industry drafting standards.
• May assist with estimating quantities for items such as pavement and earthwork.
• Ensure proper version control and documentation of revisions.
• Incorporate survey data, GIS information, and field notes into design files.
• Perform self‑checks and peer reviews to ensure accuracy and compliance with project specifications.
• Identify potential design conflicts or constructability issues and communicate them to the engineering team. This may include performing occasional field visits to reconcile prepared plan data with existing site conditions.
• Stay current with software updates, drafting best practices, and emerging technologies.
• May prepare exhibits for conceptual layouts, engineering reports, project discussions, and client meetings.

Qualifications

• Some technical education, specialized training or work experience with one or more CAD platforms such as AutoCAD, Microstation, ARC/INFO, GIS.
• Knowledge of basic math (geometry) involved in the production and use of drawings or models.
• Experience with drafting preferred.
