Job summary

Houston Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Civil Engineer Intern who will split time between outdoor construction activities and in‑office project assistance. The role offers hands‑on mentorship and exposure to meaningful local projects.

As an intern, you will assist with plan specifications and estimates, support AutoCAD Civil 3D drawings, operate GPS/Total Station survey tools, and use ArcGIS, MicroStation, and related software. Excellent math and communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering, Bioproducts and Biosystem Engineering, or related Engineering program.
• Completed coursework in surveying and AutoCAD preferred.
• Able to work extended periods outdoors.
• Above-average math and communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license and availability for overnight travel.

Responsibilities

• Assist with AutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and redlines with project drawings.
• Operate electronic survey instruments such as GPS and Total Station.
• Work with AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArcGIS, and related software.

• Assist with research, development and design of projects.

A Civil Engineer Intern with Houston Engineering Inc. (HEI) will spend time in the field working on outdoor construction phase activities as well as a variety of in-office projects assisting engineers.

Job Description

As an intern, responsibilities may include some or all of the following:

• Assist with plan specifications and estimates as well as documenting construction activities.
• Assist withAutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and updateredlines withvarious project set drawings.
• Operate electronic survey instruments such as GPS and Total Station.
• Perform workin a variety ofsoftware such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArcGIS,etc.
• Potential observation and data collection at different types of project sites.
• Assistwith research, development and design of projects.

We strive to provide a personalized internship based on your area of interest. This may include learning how to do roadway design, geometric layout, drainage analysis, and erosion control.

The estimated rate of pay is $22-$24 per hour, depending on experience.
