Salary
Your salary will be based on your demonstrated ability to hit the ground running with the Key Responsibilities listed below.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify design/project requirements and constraints based on ordinance, regulations, and agency standards (local zoning, VDOT, utility owner design and construction standards, federal regulations, etc.)
- Create basemaps and surfaces
- Assist engineers with site design tasks, such as laying out parking lots per requirements
- Perform preliminary grading, including existing and proposed surface creation
- Create alignments and plans & profiles for roads and water/sewer/storm systems
- Assist engineers with hydraulic and hydrologic analysis (drainage area delineation, land cover, and soil type identification, etc.)
- Create erosion and sediment control plans and narratives per DEQ requirements and engineer input
- Perform limited plan QC, reviewing content and ensuring conformance with company standards
- Assist with submittal forms for review
- Assist with report writing (conducting background research and data collection, entering project information, and performing initial document setup for Phase I ESAs, Environmental Impact Reports, Preliminary Engineering Reports for water/sewer design, Determination of Need for Traffic Impact Analysis reports, Turn Warrants, Bid Document preparation, etc.)
- Interact as needed with review agencies, contractors, and owners/developers
- Assist with construction cost estimates (QTO, price research, etc.)
Qualifications
- 5+ years of Civil 3D experience in the context of site/civil land development design projects
- Strong verbal communication skills and a collaborative mindset
- Strong attention to detail, desire to learn, and ability to follow directions
- No specific education or licensure required—demonstrated ability matters most
- Valid Virginia driver's license required, along with an acceptable driving record as defined by our insurer, and must pass a criminal background check
Physical Requirements
This position involves a combination of office-based and field-based work. Candidates must be able to safely perform tasks in both environments as outlined below, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Must be able to sit or stand at a desk for extended periods while using a computer, mouse, and other office equipment. Requires the ability to view screens, read technical documents, and communicate clearly by phone, video call, and in person. Occasional bending, crouching, or reaching may be required to access files and equipment stored between floor and shoulder height.
- Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods on uneven terrain and in varying site conditions, including construction zones, wooded areas, and open fields. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of survey or inspection equipment. Tasks may include kneeling, bending, or reaching to collect data or perform measurements. Work may be performed outdoors in a range of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
