Job summary

The NYC Department of Buildings is seeking an Electrical Inspector to enforce the NYC Construction Codes, Electrical Code, and Department rules during inspections of electrical installations, repairs, or alterations.

Under general supervision, the role includes inspections with FDNY, issuing violations, reviewing plans, and maintaining thorough records. Applicants must meet extensive experience/licensing requirements and may qualify for the 55-a program; residency in NYC is not required.

Qualifications

  • Five years of full-time experience as electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations, light, heat and/or power distribution, traffic signals, fire alarm detection or communication systems.
  • Three years of experience as described in 1 above, and one of: 60 credits towards a degree in electrical engineering/tech or two years of full-time training in electrical program.
  • Completion of an apprentice program at least three years in length in the electrical trade or inspection with related experience or education.
  • A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued by NYS.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to 1–3 above.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical inspections of electrical installations for conformity with NYC Construction Codes, Electrical Code, and department rules.
  • M ake periodic inspections of electrical wiring in combustible occupancies and places of public assembly.
  • Perform joint inspections with FDNY at fires and accidents to identify electrical defects.
  • Issue violations, summonses, and stop work orders.
  • Maintain records and make reports.
  • Testify as needed at ECB, depositions, and court.
