Job summary

Qualifications

• Considerable knowledge of materials, tools, methods, and techniques used in residential and/or commercial and industrial construction work to insure compliance with City ordinances and for quality of workmanship.
• Considerable knowledge of possible hazards arising from faulty construction work.
• Ability to perform inspections of residential and/or commercial and industrial structures for use of proper tools, materials, practices and procedures.
• Reasonable knowledge of City ordinances related to residential and/or commercial and industrial structures.
• Ability to understand and interpret ordinances and codes.

Responsibilities

• Inspect residential and/or commercial and industrial building construction during and upon completion to insure use of proper materials and compliance with City ordinances and for quality of workmanship.
• Inspect additions, alterations, new structures and uses to insure compliance with the zoning ordinance.
• Inspect signs, enforce sign ordinance as required.
• Check plans and specifications submitted for approval, assist in estimating permit fees.
• Assist and advise contractors and others in making out applications and issue permits.
• Investigate violations of building ordinances while in the field; take necessary action to enforce City ordinances, make court appearances.
• Provide assistance and information to contractors and the general public in regard to City building ordinances.
• Perform necessary visual grade inspections on sites and of topsoil and sand removal operations; recommend methods of correction when necessary.
• Prepare periodic records and reports of inspections, complaints, and violations.
• Work in cooperation with Electrical, Plumbing, Heating, Building and Fire Inspectors.

Job description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Perform difficult and skilled inspection of residential and/or commercial and industrial structures to insure compliance with City ordinances and for quality workmanship; inspect signs, enforce sign ordinance.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is under the general supervision of the Chief City Building Inspector.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following:

Inspect residential and/or commercial and industrial building construction during and upon completion to insure use of proper materials and compliance with City ordinances and for quality of workmanship.

Inspect additions, alterations, new structures and uses to insure compliance with the zoning ordinance.

Inspect signs, enforce sign ordinance as required.

Check plans and specifications submitted for approval, assist in estimating permit fees.

Assist and advise contractors and others in making out applications and issue permits.

Investigate violations of building ordinances while in the field; take necessary action to enforce City ordinances, make court appearances.

Provide assistance and information to contractors and the general public in regard to City building ordinances.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to perform inspections of residential and/or commercial and industrial structures for use of proper tools, materials, practices and procedures.

Reasonable knowledge of City ordinances related to residential and/or commercial and industrial structures.

Ability to understand and interpret ordinances and codes.

Ability to prepare comprehensive reports in connection with inspections, complaints and violations of City ordinances.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees.

Requirements:

• Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent.
  Diploma or official, sealed transcripts REQUIRED with application
• Four (4) years of experience in building construction work or municipal code enforcement.
• Compliance with the State of Michigan Public Act #407 ‘Skilled Trades Registration Act.”
• Possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Michigan.
• Driving record must meet city’s standards for insurability.

Pay rate: $76,887/year - $85,530/year (after 5 years)
