Job summary

City of Dearborn Career Opportunities seeks a Licensed Building Inspector to join the Dearborn Administrative Center in Dearborn, MI. You will inspect buildings to ensure compliance with codes, review plans, and address public inquiries to support safe, compliant construction.

The role requires an Associate’s degree with 1 year of related experience, or 3 years with applicable certifications, plus Act 407 certification and a valid Michigan driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree and 1 year of related experience; or, all required certification(s) and 3 years of related experience.
  • Act 407 Certification or obtain within 6 months of employment
  • Valid State of Michigan driver’s license
  • Criminal background check and drug screen required; 1-year probationary period

Responsibilities

  • Inspect construction and repair of buildings for code compliance.
  • Review building plans for code compliance and approve or reject plans.
  • Inspect residential and commercial properties for occupancy eligibility and non-compliance issues.
  • Respond to code interpretation, permit, and related inquiries from residents and contractors.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance at duties and meetings.

Salary Range: $77,040.00 - $108,086.00

BUILDING INSPECTOR (LICENSED)

SALARY: Minimum: $77,040.00 Maximum: $108,086.00

Position will typically hire at minimum pay and follow a step progression to maximum

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position is responsible for inspecting buildings to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances. Responsibilities may include performing inspections for construction and repair of buildings; reviewing construction plans; and responding to various inquiries from the public.

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  • Inspects the construction, alteration, and repair of buildings for compliance with codes, ordinances, and approved building plans and specifications; enforces codes and ordinances.
  • Reviews building plans for compliance with codes and ordinances; approves or rejects plans based on findings.
  • Inspects residential and commercial properties for compliance with codes and ordinances; approves or denies re-occupancy of properties; prepares suggestions for resolving non-compliance issues.
  • Responds to code interpretation, building permit, and related inquiries from residents, contractors, and others.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required meetings.

QualificationsEXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Associate’s degree and 1 year of related experience; or, all required certification(s) and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
  • Act 407 Certification or obtain within 6 months of employment
  • Valid State of Michigan driver’s license
POST-EMPLOYMENT OFFER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal background check (including sex offender registry if applicable) and drug screen that tests for illegal drugs as defined by the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act but not those legalized under Michigan law.
  • All appointees are subject to a one-year probationary period.
