Job summary

Qualifications

• Considerable knowledge of materials, tools, methods, and techniques used in residential and/or commercial and industrial construction work to insure compliance with City ordinances and for quality of workmanship.
• Considerable knowledge of possible hazards arising from faulty construction work.
• Ability to perform inspections of residential and/or commercial and industrial structures for use of proper tools, materials, practices and procedures.
• Reasonable knowledge of City ordinances related to residential and/or commercial and industrial structures.
• Ability to understand and interpret ordinances and codes.

Responsibilities

• Inspect residential and/or commercial and industrial building construction during and upon completion to insure use of proper materials and compliance with City ordinances and for quality of workmanship.
• Inspect additions, alterations, new structures and uses to insure compliance with the zoning ordinance.
• Inspect signs, enforce sign ordinance as required.
• Check plans and specifications submitted for approval, assist in estimating permit fees.
• Assist and advise contractors and others in making out applications and issue permits.
• Investigate violations of building ordinances while in the field; take necessary action to enforce City ordinances, make court appearances.
• Provide assistance and information to contractors and the general public in regard to City building ordinances.
• Perform necessary visual grade inspections on sites and of topsoil and sand removal operations; recommend methods of correction when necessary.
• Prepare periodic records and reports of inspections, complaints, and violations.
• Work in cooperation with Electrical, Plumbing, Heating, Building and Fire Inspectors.
